Common Core Reading Standards
The Common Core Reading Standards emphasize deep reading, analysis, comprehension, and critical thought for both fiction and nonfiction text.
Wordly Wise
We will use Wordly Wise 3000, Grade 5, as part of our vocabulary work. Students will complete the workbook activities and take a quiz for each lesson. At the beginning of the year, students will be given class time to work on the workbook activities. As the year progresses, students will complete the work activities at home. The workbook activities are equally as important as the final multiple-choice tests. The activities show student's critical thinking, ability to determine synonyms and antonyms, and sentence writing skills. My expectations for work- book activities can be found HERE.
Wordly Wise provides Quizlet sets which students can use for practice. Students do not have to join Quizlet or joint my Quizlet class in order to use these activities. Click HERE for the link.

Root Words
We will also learn over 100 Latin and Greek root words and prefixes. Students will make note cards for each word. One side will have the root word, and the other side will have 3-5 English derivatives which use the root word. The notecards are safeguarded in a plastic case which will be provided by the teacher.
